Come Flyer With Me: Neil Delamare

Blog by Neil Delamare | 06 Aug 2011

I hate handing out flyers. But still, it is obligatory at a certain stage of your career. It is one of the Edinburgh rules etched into stone somewhere.

1. You must hand out flyers.

2. You must try to climb Arthur’s Seat after an ill-advised all night drinking session.

3. You must further international relations by furthering international relations with a member of your venue staff. (They will be Australian).

There are two schools of thought on whether the performer themselves should hand out said flyer. The relatively unknown act can use those brief moments with an unsuspecting punter to make a connection, to sell the show in way that a normal flyerer wouldn’t. The small piece of paper is ceremoniously handed over, slowly, reverentially. Smile, be charming you think. Don’t say anything racist.

You’ve only got seconds to form that all important bond. Get this right and surely your show becomes an irresistible prospect. Now they want to go to your show. No, they need to go to your show. Failure to go to your show may result in death or at least a coma.

On the other hand the average member of the public may think “Why the hell would any half decent comedian be handing out his own flyers? This lad must be rubbish”.

There’s only one way to find out. Take the flyer. Come to our shows.

Neil Delamere will be performing nightly throughout the Edinburgh Fringe at the Pleasance Above at 7.40pm
