Come Flyer With Me: Casual Violence

Blog by James Hamilton of Casual Violence | 08 Aug 2011

Returning to the Mile to flyer with Casual Violence! is a daunting prospect. Having an eight-strong flyering team sounds good on paper, but our group’s unique approaches to promoting a show became questionable, absurd and borderline obscene as the weeks went on. By the end of the first week, our musician Adam had started handing out flyers along with the tagline “Justin Bieber’s DEAD!” (He wasn’t).

It all went downhill from there. Memorable opening gambits included “Who would win in a fight between JESUS and THE OCEAN?!”(Jesus, obviously, would walk all over it); parodying frozen street scenes by surrounding innocent punters in grotesque poses and shouting “TABLEAU!”; and, by the end of our second week, the guitar-led, one-chord Awkward Situation Song:

“I’m cre-a-ting /An awkward situation /

I’m cre-a-ting! /an awkward situation

I’m cre-a-ting /An awkward situation /

I’m making you feel quite uncomfortable!”

(pause; repeat)

These “flyering techniques”, of course, had nothing to do with our show. Adam resolutely claims it helped sell tickets. But I doubt it.

We won’t be repeating any of these this year – borrow them at your own risk!
