The Box Show @ Pleasance Courtyard

The Box Show from Dominique Salerno is genuinely offensive and deeply unfunny

TW: Violence against women, child loss

The Box Show is well constructed, in that it’s a solid wooden box complete with shelves, costume changes and four swinging doors. The material from Dominique Salerno is the opposite.

The Box Show is a viscerally misogynistic hour void of humour which gratuitously and irredeemably revels in violence against women. In one three minute scene, Salerno acts out the sexualised murder of a woman in the boot of a car. In another, a stillbirth is alluded to. It is enraging and frankly unbelievable that this show has made it to the Fringe, one of its most prestigious venues, and classified as a comedy.

Do not let this act rob you of your time or money. Instead, if you’re looking for a comedy show around 3pm, please consider any of the following:
– Adam Flood: Clayhead Remoulded, Monkey Barrel at The Hive (Hive 2), until 28 Aug (not 15), 3.20pm
Adam Riches is The Guys Who…, Underbelly Cowgate (Cow Cafe), until 27 Aug, 2.10pm
– Alex Franklin: I Must Reach the Summit, Please God I Must Reach the Summit, Underbelly Cowgate (Delhi Belly), until 27 Aug (not 14), 3.55pm
– Amy Matthews: I Feel Like I’m Made of Spiders, Monkey Barrel at The Tron, until 27 Aug (not 16, 23), 3pm
– Bilal Zafar: Imposter, Underbelly Bristo Square (Friesian), until 28 Aug (not 14), 3.50pm
– Bronwyn Sweeney: Off-Brand, Pleasance Courtyard (Bunker 3), until 28 Aug (not 15), 3.20pm
– Josh Glanc: Collections 2023, Monkey Barrel (MB4), until 20 Aug, 3.35pm
– Rosalie Minnitt: Clementine, Underbelly Cowgate (Delhi Belly), until 27 Aug (not 14), 2.25pm
– Stuart Goldsmith: Spoilers, Monkey Barrel (MB1), until 27 Aug (not 16), 3.20pm

Alternatively, if that’s put you off seeing shows entirely (and who’d blame you), here’s some nice things to do costing £11.50-13.50 at approximately 3pm:
– Buy yourself a big hot sandwich from Alby’s (Leith or Southside)
– Treat a friend to a coffee or a pint from any of Edinburgh’s excellent independent cafes and pubs
– Donate some money to Edinburgh Rape Crisis, Scottish Women’s Aid or Shakti Women’s Aid
