Andi Osho @ The Stand

Article by Julie Paterson | 23 Aug 2010

Andi Osho quickly establishes herself as a safe pair of hands, effortlessly chatting to the audience and cultivating a natural stage presence.

AfroBlighty focuses on Osho’s upbringing in the London borough of Newham (recently voted Britain’s third worst place to live) and addresses her identity as both a cockney and a Nigerian, together with her complicated relationship with race. Her warm, engaging personality carries the show’s weaker moments and whilst none of the material breaks new ground – especially on the theme of political correctness – it is an accomplished debut performance.

The show ends with a spoken word poem describing the good, bad and ugly of multicultural Britain today.  Although perhaps not to everyone’s taste, it is heartfelt and showcases one of the many other strings to her bow.

You may have already seen Osho on Mock the Week. I suspect you will be seeing a lot more of her in the future.

The Stand, 23-29 Aug, 5.35pm, £8 (£7)
