Adam Belbin: Half of Next Year's Show
If you’ve seen any of Adam Belbin’s promotional material, you’ll have a pretty good idea of what this show is like; half-arsed, a bit of a piss-take, very sweet, and intriguing. I mean, what kind of performer makes their posters using their no drawing skills on Paint?
Belbin’s style is shambling and extremely natural. The whole show has a bit of a last-minute DIY feel to it, but that’s no accident – he’s got you thinking he doesn’t know what he’s doing, and that’s exactly where he wants you.
For pun fans and crap joke fans, this is the place to be – he’s got some corkers. And it’s impossible not to fall for his shabby, cheeky kind of charm – I’d love to see what he’s like a few drinks in. The show’s highlight is when he practices the art of conversation with a member of the audience. His unwavering, playing field-levelling, utterly endearing honesty is genius.
Unfortunately for a man with quite a high voice, the room gets a lot of noise from outside. He has to fight for the audience’s attention, and he doesn’t win on this occasion. Belbin is a talented comedian; as a performer, he is better than the material in this show. Fingers crossed for next year.
