Today Edinburgh International Film Festival launched its The Young & the Wild programme, the festival’s strand devoted to films about and for young people. In addition to the screenings, The Young & the Wild also includes an array of special events, talks and masterclasses for youth audiences, with all screenings and events co-designed by the EIFF Young Programmers, a group of 15-19 year-olds.

This year the expanded Young & the Wild strand takes over a new venue: Cornerstone Centre at St John’s Church on Princes St. Among the highlights are an illustrated Animation Masterclass from Disney•Pixar’s character tailoring lead, Fran Kalal (Incredibles 2, Inside Out, Up, WALL·E), a BAFTA Scotland Careers Close-up Masterclass with cinematographer Urszula Pontikos (Film Stars Don’t Die in Liverpool, Lilting, Second Coming) and a screenwriting Masterclass with EIFF Screenwriter in Residence, Nicole Taylor (Three Girls, The C Word).

In addition, there’s a Directing Workshop with Garry Fraser (Second Unit Director on Trainspotting 2, writer-director on upcoming serial drama The Grey Area), workshops on film journalism and screenwriting, and a chance to make a film during EIFF as part of the join the doc workshop, the results of which are screened during the official The Young & the Wild closing event. Another way for young people to get involved in EIFF is as part of its Student Critics Competition, more details of which can be found here.

The Young & the Wild pass is £5 and gives free access to all the The Young & the Wild events at Cornerstone Centre, plus discounted tickets for the main EIFF programme.
