For Scottish film fans, June means one thing: Edinburgh International Film Festival. And the main festival's annual alfresco warmup, Film Fest in the City, will also return to St Andrew Square this year, with another line-up of free screenings that straddle old favourites, cult classics and up-to-date releases.

In the mix is the delirious fun of the stylish and zesty Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse and the brilliant existential comedy Groundhog Day, in which Bill Murray plays a misanthropic weatherman caught in a time loop. There's also a screening of the brilliant existential comedy Groundhog Day, in which Bill Murray plays a misanthropic weatherman caught in a time loop.

Other films announced so far include classic romance When Harry met Sally, effervescent roller disco musical Xanadu, Scottish-set Pixar movie Brave and Brad Bird's endearing and enduring animation The Iron Giant. If you're really hardcore, meanwhile, there's a double-bill of Mamma Mia! and Mamma Mia!: Here We Go Again. If you must, there's also Bohemian Rhapsody, Mary Poppins Returns and The Greatest Showman. On top of the free movies, expect pop-up bars from the likes of Edinburgh Gin, Innis & Gunn and Poco Prosecco.

“The annual outdoor screenings make for the perfect taster before the festival proper begins a few days later," says EIFF artistic director Mark Adams. "Watching a film outdoors is such a special experience and it is always gratifying to see film fans arriving at beautiful St Andrew Square Garden for this wonderful social event. We have a lovely blend of old and new, and some musical pleasures alongside animated classics.”
