It's that time of year for the Edinburgh College of Art Degree Show, which will feature – along with all kinds of weird and wonderful creations - first rate designs from the graduating fashion class. Head along later this month and imagine what you might be able to recreate yourself for a different kind of night on the toon.

On display here are designs by Eleanor Spalding, Lindsey Brown and Iona Crawford. Eleanor was strongly influenced by historical costume, as can clearly be seen with this beautiful dress. Her particular interests were details, patterns and embellishment, and she trained herself up in hand embroidery, as well as experimenting with boning techniques for shape definition. Lindsey was inspired by the work of illustrator Harry Cork, who created images to accompany works by such visionaries as Edgar Allen Poe and Hans Christian Andersen, as well as 60s and 80s streetwear (that's her monochrome kimono-style number). Of her own work, she says "the intention was to create a fun collection with a sinister undertone of childhood fears." (lindsey.a.brown@hotmail.co.uk)

Iona Crawford (that's her holding the umbrella) chose to feminise masculine dress to create girls' clothing, particularly focusing on the trope of military style. For the dress displayed she stripped down three ex-Army bashers and hand wove them into the final dress - so why the model needs the umbrella, who knows. (ony_cranberry@hotmail.com)
