Made In The Shade Returns To The Lighthouse

Article by Mhairi Graham | 01 Apr 2010

Made in the Shade is a delightful troupe of craft and creativity, comprised of illustrators, innovators and textile makers. The collaborative outfit provide a boutique marketplace for new and exclusive Scottish designers, and normally reside in their Maisonette in De Courcy’s Arcade: a home of one-off pieces and quirky, kitschy eccentricities. Think 1950s dancehall meets suburban housewife; beehives and rockabilly wrapped up in aprons and icing sugar.

Step into their enchanting and delightful world of retro home wear, dolls, teacups, artwork, jewels and frocks, as the girls invite you to their handcrafted hub on 17 April in the Lighthouse, Glasgow, as they return to their former home to host a fete of over 40 stalls, celebrating all things stylish and lovely. They will also be debuting their jamboree in Edinburgh on 15 May at the Roxy Art House.

What began as a small fair in a church hall has grown to become a thriving buzz of diversity and talent, where seamstresses and artists combine to create designs that push the idea of craft away from its cliché comparisons to elderly cross-stitch and shoddy bric-a-brac towards a contemporary outlook; a stylish, indie approach to traditional techniques and ideas. It’s craft without the crap. An emporium of vintage inspired treats and treasures, accompanied by live music and a cake lounge. What more could you ever want?! Get down early to grab a goody bag!
