During its 128th annual Degree Show this June, Gray’s School of Art at Robert Gordon University will present 14 graduate Fashion collections. This Degree Show, being held on campus at the Faculty of Health, will be the first to incorporate the three different disciplines of womenswear, menswear and childrenswear.

Two graduates among this year’s offering, Jenny Rowand and Samantha Hair, have recently been nominated for the prestigious Scottish Graduate of the Year Award at the 2013 Scottish Fashion Awards, which is to be held in October at Dover House, London.

Samantha Hair’s soft and feminine collection was inspired by applying both contemporary and historical techniques of haute couture to the photography of marine biologist Alexander Semenov. Hair is aiming to work in the couture side of the fashion industry, and has showcased her talent for this specialised area by hand-making as many aspects of her own designs as possible.

In a collection completely different to Hair’s, Jenny Rowand has drawn her inspiration from traditional body modifications and the different rites and rituals of various indigenous cultures. The garments making up Rowand’s collection are almost entirely made from tough black leather and lyrca; texture and visual interest were created by a number of techniques such as printing and laser cutting.

Other notable graduating students include Melanie Gibb, whose collection is the first ever childrenswear one from Gray’s, and Ruby Coyne, who set up her own label Ruby and the Dream of Horses whilst still studying two years ago.

Grays alumni include last year’s graduates Toni Roddie and Emma Noble, whose label Saunt & Sinner has been nominated for Young Designer of the Year at this year’s Scottish Fashion Awards.
