Rhod Gilbert

Article by Erin McElhinney | 16 Aug 2009

I want to like Rhod Gilbert. I really do. He seems like, well, a really nice guy. There’s no doubt he’s original, that he throws every ounce of energy into his set, an hour during which he stops his 100 mile an hour chatter only to sip from the beer that he is otherwise wildly gesticulating with.

The problem is, though, that large chunks of his – oddly terribly endearing – ranting become a little tedious. The material that’s good is very good, Gilbert’s explanation of the show title is wonderfully perfect, and there’s no doubt he has the best exit line of the Fringe so far. The intriguing final coda brings it all together, and finally gives a firm hold on what Gilbert is going for – it’s just a shame it takes the whole show for it to happen.
