April Comedy Preview

Feature by Xavier Toby | 16 Apr 2006
With March over so is the Glasgow Comedy Festival and from all reports it's been another leap forward as this year has again set records for the number of shows, number of venues, attendance and most importantly laughs!

Don't worry though, comedy is a monster that definitely doesn't sleep. Sure it drinks, smokes and given half a chance will try to pull anything that breathes, but it don't sleep. It has been known to pass out occasionally, but hey whatever…

At The Stand in Edinburgh and Glasgow there will be top class comedy every night of the week, as per usual. Check the listings section for full details, but if you haven't seen it before Dance Monkey Boy Dance is improvised comedy genius, plain and simple, and often sells out. It happens most Monday nights in Glasgow and is making the trip through to Edinburgh for Wednesday April 5th.

Also over in Edinburgh this month on Thurs April 20th – Sat April 22nd Canadian Craig Campbell will be headlining (see the interview) along with Greg McHugh, worth seeing for the bus story alone, and Australian Marcus Ryan who impressed many during his Fringe Show last year - all presented by The Stand's wonderful resident comperes.

In Glasgow Jo Caufield performs her topical, bitchy and brilliant banter with David Kay and Graeme Thomas from Thurs April 20th – Sat April. Earlier in the month, Thurs April 13th - Sat April 16th, Carey Marx will be delivering his hilarious tales along with Matt Blaize, known for his insightful and hilarious social commentary, Phil Differ and funny little Irish woman Frances Healy.

In terms of local laughs in Edinburgh James Blood, which is a great name for comedy as well as for a dentist, is promoting 'The 50p Show' featuring James Murray along with James Blood, as well as sketches from Beth Hamilton, Ben Verth and Barney Norris, all hosted by resident compere Roddy MacInnes at the Canon's Gait basement at 8pm on April 18th, May 2nd and May 16th. Also Sidetracked comedy has made a welcome return to Belushi's down on Market St every Tuesday from 9pm. The show features some of the best new and established comedy talent and it's all for free!

In Glasgow Haha comedy presents The Big Bluu Comedy Gong show every Thursday at Bluu in the Merchant City. There's a £100 prize for whoever can beat the gong but it's not so much a night of quality stand-up as a comedy bloodbath, but hey if you fancy getting smashed and yelling abuse at terrified strangers, give it a go. There's also Blackfriars comedy every Friday and Saturday night, also in the Merchant City, and Curlers in the West End every Friday. Both always feature quality local line-ups and are great nights of comedy, no doubt about it.

Edinburgh and Glasgow Jongleurs this month will be running comedy featuring top class touring guests, every Friday and Saturday, as per usual. Worth a special mention is the weekend of April 7th in Glasgow which will feature the near perfect one-liners of Martin Beaumont, Gary Delaney's brilliantly deadpan delivery and Dave Johns whose shaggy dog story is the stuff of comedy legend.
