zerodB - Bongos, Bleeps & Basslines

Needs to be heard to be experienced

Unfortunately zerodB's debut album will not be out 'till Summer (and judging by the pissing rain that will be far away), so we have got our grubby hands on a two-track teaser courtesy of Ninja Tune; zerodB's new alliance. The aptly-named track Bongos, Bleeps and Basslines, from the album of the same moniker, is a curious mix of jazz, electro, buzzing basslines, and latin bongos that strangely work to great effect. The bass is thick enough to withstand the onset of contradicting and unusual genres criss-crossing the vinyl, finishing off with a satisfyingly squelchy prolonged reverb. The aa-side, 'Know What I'm Sayin' featuring vocals from Pase Rock (regular Spank Rock contributor) is a jazzy piano piece jammed up against bleeps and kick drum with some catchy lyrics like 'nineteen cats with a suicide pact'. This sort of mixture needs to be heard to be experienced so keep a look out for Bongos... in the coming months. [Alex Burden]

The album Bongos, Bleeps & Basslines is released on June 12.
