Album title: I Hope I Never Love Anything As Much As I Love You
Artist: Zaum
Label: Amazon Records
It has been said that for the last five years Steve Harris's Zaum has been creating some of the most interesting improvised jazz anywhere in the UK. While most certainly in the marmite realm of attraction, those who like their jazz raw, noir and laced with chaos rate Harris and the Zaum collective highly. Many of the musicians have their roots in leftfield rock and post-Coltrane sonic experimentation, which can be clearly heard in the cathartic track, Watt's Curve. Recorded in the bowels of St. Aldhem's Church, Dorset, the seven tracks combine and take you on a journey, whether it's the epic Rise in Sin or the incredibly frightening world of Winter Everywhere, the album evokes a wide range of emotions. So if you ain't the type of cat who likes their jazz off the cuff and off the wall best give Zaum a miss. [Franck Martin]
