Wahoo - Take It Personal

An attempt to mix up styles, with varying results

Album Review by Colin Chapman | 08 Sep 2007
Album title: Take It Personal
Artist: Wahoo
Label: Fine
Berlin-based singer/songwriter Georg Levin and producer Steffen 'Dixon' Berkhahn first joined forces as Wahoo to remix artists such as Jazzanova and Victor Davies. Take It Personal sees them attempt to mix up styles, with varying results. Holding more of mainstream focus than their remix work, it's definitely the straighter-edged tracks like Don't Take It Personal, Get Another Girl, Damn (You're Here), and Shine that seem to work best. Elsewhere sees a surprising mixture of collaborations with Basement Jaxx's Felix Buxton, Paul Randolph and Robert Owens all making an appearance; Carl Craig also takes a turn behind the mixing desk. However, it's the album's pick 'n' mix, not-quite-pop approach that overall lets it down, the handful of stronger tracks on offer failing to gloss over this fact. Roll on the remixes. [Colin Chapman]
