UNKLE - Night's Temper EP

It's a far cry from Kool G Rap dropping his rugged lyrical bombs while Shadow mans the console, but it'll do us nicely

Label: Surrender All

"If the first record was UNKLE does hip-hop and the second was UNKLE does electronic, then this one is like UNKLE does rock..." James Lavelle reasoned to The Skinny in conversation late last year. As a pre-empt to the forthcoming War Stories, Lavelle keeps his promise with this four track strong slab of hybridised trip-hop and desert rock. As iffy as all that might sound, the hard grooves, lilting vocals and dirty bass packs a fairly substantial psychedelic punch. Though the lukewarm lullaby that the Autolux collaboration turns into might weaken the pack slightly, the efforts of Josh Homme (QOTSA), The Duke Spirit and Chris Goss aid Lavelle, and File in saving the day elsewhere. It's a far cry from Kool G Rap dropping his rugged lyrical bombs while Shadow mans the console, but it'll do us nicely. [Dave Kerr]

Released: Out now.
The Album, War Stories is released through Surrender All on 2 July.
