Underworld, The Academy, Glasgow, 13 Oct
An atmosphere only an exchange of energy between a loyalist fan base and a fan-conscious act can produce
Thank god Underworld decided to steer clear of the SECC, a venue they could very easily have packed. For an outfit that normally grace the higher stratum of festival line-ups all over the world, to play a venue of this size is a rare thing. The occasionally cavernous and sterile Academy is made to feel like half its size, with people and sound only barely contained within the walls. The atmosphere is worked to the intensity that only an exchange of energy between a loyalist fan base and a fan-conscious act can produce. Each song raises a bigger and bigger cheer, with Born Slippy shamelessly and joylessly flogged for over ten minutes. New numbers sit comfortably in the well-drilled set list, sounding more suited to the live environment than was originally expected. A rightly anticipated and fully realised event that won't be repeated anytime soon. [Jack McFarlane]
