The Youngsters (live), Triptych, Ufreak, Cabaret Voltaire, Edinburgh, 28 Apr
What a night for Ufreak!
| 10 Jun 2007
What a night for Ufreak! Resident Carl Legend kicks off the Triptych special with some choice funky loops threaded through 4/4 bass for a chilled edge that is somewhat trancey. The artillery of beats gradually increase in bpm with careful attention from Legend, not peaking too early, or dipping too low. Elements of house, techno, and Europe's obsession with the janglier side of electro synths lay out the table for a live Youngsters spread. As the headliners approach the stage, they incite the crowd to polite applause for their warm-up, a rare event in Scottish clubs. With Mac and mixers at the ready, they launch into a sturdy set of 808 claps and live scratching from Olivier M; so subtle that only a good view of the equipment set-up reveals the secret. Meanwhile, Gil le Gamin appears to be giving heart massage to the mixer as he rhythmically pumps both arms - at this point tune selection becomes an almost obsolete factor - with old pros like The Youngsters, the magic is in the art of mixing. Classics from their reportoire are mingled with snatches from newer tracks like Allgemeine Elektric; and the layers are thick like syrup, and vibrating like the infamous Jurassic Park puddle. They finish the set with the darkest tones of the evening, grinding out organ synth laid atop electronica. Neatly sandwiching the delicious set is Ufreak resident Jay Steinveg, for a short but sweet twirl on the decks. [Alex Burden]
