Talkingmakesnosense - Surroundings

As pleasant as it is to lose oneself in Dixon's web of sounds, there is nothing very challenging on offer here

Album title: Surroundings
Artist: Talkingmakesnosense
Label: Benbecula

Part of Benbecula's ongoing 'Minerals' series, in 'Surroundings' Dominic Dixon takes us on a highly textured journey through intricate fields of ambient noise and found samples, pinned together by passages of guitar and synthesized sounds. Christian Fennesz and William Basinski are clear points of reference for Dixon as he explores the possibilities of melody and composition on this laid back collection of tracks. As pleasant as it is to lose oneself in Dixon's web of sounds, there is nothing very challenging on offer here and many of his creations will feel disconcertingly familiar to fans of the genre. His occasional sparing guitar lines also feel somewhat decorative, and rarely manage to play off against the ambient atmospheres in as successful a way as, for example, an artist such as Stephen Wilkinson in his work with Bibio. Not essential listening, but a pleasurable journey nonetheless. [Jay Shukla]
