Ochre - Lemodie

A beautifully constructed piece that brings the worlds of classical and ambient music successfully together

Album Review by Alex Burden | 15 Jul 2006
Album title: Lemodie
Artist: Ochre
Label: Benbecula Records

Lemodie' is all about the melody, which floats through Ochre's brand of ambient chill-out electronica like a subtle summer breeze. 111 begins the album with glitchy, minimal (yet complex) orchestral electronics that stretch on for over seven minutes. There are multiple classical instruments used in all the tracks, from cellos to glockenspiel and clarinet. The sound is grandiose but not unwieldy, and creates an interesting discordance that reminds you of the old detuned pianos of grandparents' houses. 'Lemodie' becomes a bit non-offensive towards the end, and slips into the background like lift music, occasionally lifted by eerie space soundscapes evocative of Gary Numan's later work. By and large it is a beautifully constructed piece that brings the worlds of classical and ambient music successfully together. [Alex Burden]

Out July 10th on CD.
