Trouble and Dfrnt Drum are both well respected Edinburgh nightclubs with eclectic tastes influenced by soul, funk, breakbeat, Indie, jazz, and latin, with the emphasis on fun. Started by Andy Richardson (aka Hobbes, Trouble) and Robert Cairns (aka Bobu San, Dfrnt Drum), they set out to push the boundaries in a stale clubbing environment. Since it was the beginning of the Fringe Festival, Andy and Bob combined forces and set out to electrify their night, and selecting guest artists Max Tundra AKA Ben Jacobs, a pop influenced electronica genius (Warp Records, Domino Records) and DJ Kwame of popular Londonderry club Bounce was a superb move on both accounts. Tundra's style is almost indescribable: he played keyboard, guitar, sang (although he's also been known to use egg slicers and oven doors as musical instruments), while sequencing live with a Commodore Amiga 500, and generally blowing your mind with genuine enthusiasm for the music he creates. Kwame's classic house approach fused with soul, jazz, and funk, rounding off the evening with effective simplicity. It's little surprising that Trouble is Edinburgh's only BBC radio 1 club nominated for best new music club (nominated by none other than Gilles Peterson); if you consider yourself an eclectic lover of music they come recommended.[Matthew Burden]
