Album title: Momentum: A Vakant Mix Compilation
Artist: Mathias Kaden and Onur Ozer (V/A)
Label: Vakant
Mi.ni.mal. Click. Bleep. You get the gist. Kaden and Ozer's own tracks get an airing on seven occasions, used to link together the works of an electronic bretheren including Spenza, Tolga Fidan, Robag Wruhme, Alex Smoke and Quixote. Unless you're listening to this on headphones or some heavy-duty speakers, the subtle and deliberate beats tend to get lost in the ether, so either way be sure to get this blasted out. From Smoke's Strange Attractor to Robag Wruhme's Stekkrube, this is not a mix album of melodies – it's sparse, slick, and creates music out of the little rhythms of life. It reflects the beauty of noises that were never meant for music, collected together and manipulated, and there's an incredible focus and restraint of energy on all the tracks, with their intricate soundscapes. Minimal techno/electro is a genre you need to be a fan of to understand; otherwise it really does just boil down to blips and bleeps. [Struan Otter]
