There is no such thing as being spoiled for choice - what with Pendulum,
Justin Robertson, and Luke Slater all falling on this same eve. Despite the misfortune of falling on the same night as Edinburgh's largest drum and bass event to date, Slater reaps a sizeable crowd of techno junkies and messheads. And not a single beat is wasted: from the moment he graces the stage, the room crackles with anticipation. His set is one long relentless tease, dipping in and out of hard European, mostly Spanish, techno, dirty indie electro and phat hits like Woolford's Erotic Discourse to the delight of all. For those expecting a set consisting of more traditional material, this conflation of newer ground is wildly exciting. It feels like you're witnessing something special, and it just keeps coming. Minimal beats morphing into the funky freshness of electro reach a massive climax as he hurls Raudive's Here into the stratosphere, which Pyz rocks earlier in the evening; sandwiched between french electro and italo. A half-hour finale of syncopated hard eurotech, and everyone in the crowd is congratulating themselves on having made the right choice for the evening. [Rozi McLean and Alex Burden]
