James Lavelle, Sugarbeat, Cabaret Voltaire, Edinburgh, Aug 25

you know there's going to be something good on the cards

When you combine the always eclectic Sugarbeat club (started by Tim Utah of Utah Saints fame) with the excellent James Lavelle you know there's going to be something good on the cards. James didn't miss a beat (pun not intended), starting with the trademark drums of death sound, ambient textures and compression, and then building us up to a fever pitch with what could only be described as twisted Unkle-esque techno. The crowd were begging for more and, surprisingly, so was James Lavelle, who ended up playing 45 minutes into the Utahs' set. Sugarbeat has always intended to provide a genre stretching experience: if tonight's Androids' Dreams of Electric Beats got too much for you there was also opportunity to nip across to the adjoining hip hop room for something a bit more rancho relaxo. Another top night Sugarbeat. [Ralph McDevitt]
