Fujiya and Miyagi, Triptych, Bongo Club, Edinburgh, 25 Apr

His victims shrug their shoulders and leave the Bongo Club somewhat confused but certainly satisfied

Tonight's Triptych gig begins with an alarming amount of energy from Scotland's own X-Vectors. Although they dish out only a handful of their own hyperactive tunes peppered with dashes of Franz Ferdinand and Talking Heads, each song is long enough to absorb the space of two or three, and make for a hearty set. Awkwardly though, the crowd don't seem to pick up on this opportune time to do anything but stand perfectly still - the band's fearless visionary efforts are wasted, and a feverish stage presence is lost on the small, danceless sea of nodding heads. It's a lovely warm-up to the headliners from Brighton, Fujiya and Miyagi. Comprised of three far more stationary dudes, the band delivers a polished batch of goods derived mostly from their latest release, Transparent Things; with a series of seductive whispers and purrs heard throughout Sucking Punch's sexed up, electrical grooves and the ethereal funk of In One Ear and Out The Other. But just as vocalist, David Best, hooks and wraps the audience around his little finger with all of his bap-baps and uh-uhs, the gig ends abruptly and he dashes to the exit for a seemingly post-coital fag. His victims shrug their shoulders and leave the Bongo Club somewhat confused but certainly satisfied. [Kelly Smith]
