Album title: Plug It In
Artist: Color Climax
Label: Breakin Bread
Color Climax is a name that lends itself to images of a visual exuberance of emotion; in this instance, funky latin disco fits accompanied by audio illuminations entrenched in '70s glory. Whilst pandering to the soul genius of James Brown and crossing over to the darker side of Sergio Mendez, Coventry-based Color Climax are able to escape imitation, and deliver some audio gems in the process. The flow of Plug It In, the lead track from their long awaited album, screams Reservoir Dogs and could be the opening act for any Tarantino film. The guitar riff chugs along with the help of some faint grunts. Color Climax shake things up with Pa Coco Solo with a masterful stroke of chants, intricate guitar arrangements and dizzying horns. With a minimalist approach to vocals, the Coventry crew's long list of instrumentals create the perfect picture, but only if you are watching them live. Unfortunately, herein lies the problem, as this is only a CD, and jam sessions like Crabwalk and Jigsaw are lost in translation. [Omar Jenning]
