With a wonderful line-up made up of acts such as Psapp, Hot Chip and Four Tet, Built For The City was looking like a tasty proposition. A new night, in its infancy, is always going to have problems, however. The Psapp gig is partially ruined by poor sound, perhaps caused by a lack of understanding of their music. Cat-obsessed Psapp add little details to their music (squeaky toys and such things) which struggle to come across during the gig, as did the vocals. The crowd are jubilant nonetheless and are rewarded in the end with a delightful cover of Everybody Wants to be a Cat from Disney's Aristocats. The two main acts of the night come on after lengthy preparation: Four Tet play a wicked DJ set in the Play Room, while in the main room it's difficult to tell if Hot Chip are playing at all. With hardly anybody present and both acts playing at the same time, you suspect that the limited crowd are opting for some Hebden genius. On the whole, the night is a good concept, bringing live performance and a club atmosphere together. It will be interesting to see what it brings in the future. [Peter Burns]
