Alex Smoke - Make My Day EP

Sporting an unusual ice cream van jingle

Single title: Make My Day EP
Artist: Alex Smoke
Label: Soma

It's all very well deconstructing music for review, but sometimes you just don't have the heart to look too closely and would rather just listen. Make My Day, taken from Smoke's latest album 'Paradolia', is a deep and loose electronica track that you need to play several times through just to hear the half of it. Subtle blips and layers cushion the 'dulled' and contorted vocals that send spasms down the vertebrae. Minimal techno squelches travel through the spaces, and are more thoroughly embraced by Lusine's (Ghostly International) interpretation, and then slammed against the hesitated AFX glitches of Actress (Werk Discs). The remix journey ends with Snider, a stripped down straight up ditty of Detroit techno influences lasting a hefty eight and a half minutes, and sporting an unusual ice cream van jingle. It's not as intriguing or inspiring as Make My Day, but the complexity of it is satisfying enough. [Alex Burden]
