Sharam Jey Afterdark

One of many DJs who promise something different but one of only a handful who deliver the goods

The Skinny bought Sharam Jey a pint before he took to the AfterDark stage (see our review in this issue) at his Edinburgh gig to have a chat about his meteoric rise from trance also-ran to prince of cutting-edge house. We got the big issues out of the way first and discovered the man from Cologne wears Dior aftershave and has no way of getting us World Cup tickets, but nevertheless we still wanted to talk with him.

Although Sharam loves house music, he regards it as a day job: "I do that shit 24 hours a day, seven days a week, I like to listen to hip hop, reggae, rock, anything different man!" Although he has made a move away from the traditional wax to CD decks he still enthuses that "vinyl is sexy." A couple of years ago Mixmag bestowed the honourable title of 'Best Dance Track Ever' upon his remix of Café Del Mar, and upon mentioning it he bashfully lolls his head and smiles, "I think the BBC awarded it best record as well", he replies. Sharam shoots the breeze about his current sound, which he describes as minimal, but "never too minimal – I like to mix my sets up and give the crowd a little taste of everything." He comes across as a confident performer, which is understandable given that he can provide the tunes to back up his plaudits. Keep a lookout for the "too many to mention" tracks coming out on Sharam's own label, King Kong Records, this summer for some choice listening.
