Penpushers - you can expect a full-on, dark and textured set from this lyrically and musically gifted homegrown crew

Article by Bram Gieben | 15 Jun 2006
This month's GIM sees Electric Chair residents the Unabombers travelling up from Manchester to give us some of the finest in hip-hop, funk and soul, plus the pant-wettingly exciting prospect of a scratch set from former DMC champion, turntablist extraordinaire and half of Fingathing, Peter Parker. More than just your friendly neighbourhood vinyl-slinger, Parker is a truly gifted DJ who can make a crowd come alive with his scratching and cutting. The live entertainment comes from Edinburgh crew Penpushers, whose third LP 'Void Engineers' is a genre-spanning, crate-digging leftfield hip-hop classic. Having supported Public Enemy and rocked live gigs across the UK, you can expect a full-on, dark and textured set from this lyrically and musically gifted homegrown crew. Joining them will be Reptiles, and hosts the ever-lovely Trouble DJs, who have recently helped to launch a £10,000 grant for up-and-coming urban artists (see www.getintotrouble.com for details). All in all this should be another barnstorming night of entertainment from Edinburgh's GIM, with the same generously-proportioned free whisky cocktail helping to lubricate proceedings. And remember – your band can secure a set at GIM by sending demos to Cabaret Voltaire, where we at The Skinny will help to pick the best of the best. [Bram Gieben]
