Global Communication, Jedi Knights, Warp's Theory of Evolution, Cosmos... if any of these names ring a bell then you have inadvertently tapped into the Middleton sector. He may appear to you in various guises, but this eponymous Headspin appearance says it all: composer, producer, sound engineer, remix artiste and DJ, toting the idiosyncratic freestyle that has become his signature since The Trip compilations. A self-proclaimed sonic evang-chill-ist and regular slottee at The Big Chill, Middleton's live sets have a reputation for going that extra mile in the name of the sublime and the beautiful - like the accompaniment of a 25 piece choir during his DJ set at The Big Chill 2001. His objective: to infiltrate the music industry "disguised as a recording Artist and DJ/remixer for the purpose of spreading the Love." After Headspin's funktastic night with DJ Format last month, an upcoming show from one of the biggest names in ambient/electronica testifies to the scrupulously innovative standing of one of Edinburgh's most time-honoured club nights. Ten years and still triumphant as ever, Headspin nights promise a myriad of visual projections and video feeds sliced and diced to "enhance the aural experience." The scope for mind-bending visual excellence alongside Middleton's complex formula of instrumental, house, downbeat, nu-jazz, breaks, ambient and electronica is not to be missed. [Rozi McLean]
