The Warehouse Project, Trafford Park Road, Manchester, 28 Sep-1 Jan
At this time of year thoughts of winter once more begin to cloud our otherwise carefree minds but, as the sun makes its annual latitudinal shift southward, a clubbing behemoth rises again from its summer grave: Manchester’s The Warehouse Project has returned. With there being only a few years left before the current government begins to construct an 11-foot, razor wire adorned fence between Scotland and England as a result of a 'yes' vote for independence, this could literally be one of your last chances to sample one of the world’s global dance capitals (that's just ridiculous - ed).
This clubbing institution, now in its sixth year, constitutes arguably the pinnacle clubbing experience in terms of delivering multiple mindblowing headliners and some of most heavyweight support imaginable all under the one roof of that quintessential urban space - an intercity multistory carpark. The venue is suitably grungy and does not offer anything other than a place to host a vast number of people who want to go rather nuts or soak up the blindingly cool beats depending on the night, and the solid surface is more than welcome after a summer spent trampling on mud.
Even with a 12-week run of nights which begin in late September, there should be no hanging around for tickets. One look at the line-ups will tell you why: you simply don't get the chance very often to see Orbital, Modeselektor, Chris Liebing, Julio Bashmore, Apparat and Joy Orbison (Sat 1st Dec) all on the same bill. Unlike the summer festivals which try to be all things to everyone, The Warehouse Project is more akin to a selectively curated, one night only mini-festival that is built around the aesthetic of the headliners: the melodic and rhythmic sophistication of live performances from Sbtrkt, Four Tet and Tnght (Hudson Mohawke and Lunice) is matched with DJ sets from Caribou, Rustie and Jacques Greene (Sat 6 Oct), and there is a sense of their being some greater whole rather than a disparate set of performers. It would take the length of this page to even list the highlights, so it is recommended that you go and check them out for yourself and secure your tickets and begin planning a weekend down south. Just remember to come back afterwards.
