The Red Bull Music Academy Info Sessions

There's no quick fix to success in this game, but this Music Academy can help

Feature by Keira Sinclair | 11 May 2007
Hosted by Karen P (Giles Peterson's producer), the Glasgow leg of the Red Bull Music Academy Info Sessions on 18 Apr brought together a minimal techno star (Alex Smoke), a DMC world championship winning turntablist (Beni G – The Mixologists), a previous participant of Red Bull Music Academy (RBMA) and rising star (Andreya Triana) and wonky electronic/laptop doodlers (Marcia Blaine School for Girls) - all of whom gathered together to impart knowledge about their skills, influences and time served in the music industry.

The clear message is that there's no quick fix to success in this game, and hearing about the amount of hard work people have expended in the hope of pushing a boundary here or there gives hope to all bedroom DJs and producers. The Sub Club was set up like the physical Academy itself for the event, and the informal chats left plenty of room for demonstration: Smoke treating the crowd to a couple of his new tracks from an iPod; Beni G making it all look incredibly easy with Serrato Scratch Live software (where analogue meets digital, and mp3s and vinyl combine); and Marcia Blaine creating beautiful experimental/ambient electronica using a processed guitar and a range of kids toys plugged into a laptop – all projected onto a screen so eager heads could see exactly how they do it.

RBMA sounds like it could be the best fortnight of your life. The Academy is a platform for the exchange of musical knowledge and ideas – no matter what genre you're into or level of skills you have. DJ/producers from all over the world come together to eat, sleep, and breathe music, learning about all major aspects of DJ culture, including music history, technology & production, and business skills.
