Cemented as a true pioneer

Article by Colin Chapman | 15 Jun 2006
This month's Tracktion sees Dave Taylor a.k.a. Switch join resident Mash at the turntables. A hip-hop freak from Ladbroke Grove with a serious ear for beats, he's known for causing trouble on vinyl with his musical sound-clash of jackin' house and raw hip-hop influences, sprinkled with a liberal helping of soul and funk. Check out his speaker-booming anthems such as Get Ya Dub On and Get On Downz. His distinctive approach in the studio has helped cement his reputation as a true pioneer, making him one of the most in-demand remixers of the past year. His current remixography reads like a 'who's who' of dance music with the Chemical Brothers, Faithless, Basement Jaxx, Audio Bullys, Les Rhythmes Digitales, Coldcut and even Busta Rhymes all getting Switch-ed on. On top of all this he manages to find the time to run his own 'Dubsided' label, which he uses as an outlet for his freakier, more 'out-there' experimental productions. He's been championed by such high-profile dance figures as Masters At Work, Gilles Peterson, Phil Asher, Rainer Truby, Tom Middleton and Ashley Beedle, who've all come to appreciate his cheeky approach to production and consistently fresh, risk-taking musical agenda. Expect a night of four-four funk designed to induce serious rump-shaking. [Colin Chapman]
