Hailing from southern Germany, Henrik Schwarz is a long-time veteran of the country's deep-house scene. However, despite DJing being his long term first love, a desire to concentrate on his second love, design, led him to move away from music and his successful career that landed him gigs at the country's major clubs - but he retained a watchful eye on proceedings. In the mid-nineties he made a return, this time moving towards production rather than DJing. Jamming with friends in his hometown of Bodensee led him to pioneer the replacement of vinyl with a laptop for live performance. Despite his Powerbook-driven sets, his sound leans towards freeform jazz-inspired jams rather than a mechanical, monotonous groove. In the last few years, Henrik has earned a string of remix credits from a variety of labels including Classic, Compost, Freerange and Soma, though he is probably best known for his own productions on Zeppelin, Mood Music and his own Sunday-Music label, which he established with long-term friend, DJ and producer Sasse Linblad. The label's five releases have clearly illustrated their chosen philosophy of quality over quantity, no more so than Henrik's own Leave My Head Alone Brain track, sporting a nitty-gritty organ groove, swaggering drums, eccentric live-jam vocals and crazy bass modulations which has proved popular with DJs across the board. His debut at Subculture this month provides the perfect opportunity to find out what all the fuss is about. [Colin Chapman]
