Ryan Crosson @ Hotbox, 15 Jan

After giving a Glasgow debut to Lee Curtiss, Hotbox welcomes another member of Detroit techno’s next generation, Ryan Crosson.

Belying his strict, middle-class, suburban upbringing, Crosson’s quickly earned a reputation for his experimentally-edged club cuts after an introduction to his chosen sound via Plastikman’s seminal Sheet One (which he describes as his “doorway to techno”), an album he discovered while recuperating from a high school American football injury.

Responsible for output on the likes of Trapez, Dumb Unit, Wagon Repair and M_nus, he takes inspiration from a broad spectrum of music including jazz, proto-disco, fusion and African, and also records under the aliases Berg Nixon, Ian Grosson and – alongside fellow Detroit compatriots, Seth Troxler and Lee Curtiss – as Visionquest.

Aside from his production work, he’s a respected live performer and DJ, holding down residencies at Alte Borse in Zurich, Berlin’s Arena Club and his own Soulshower parties at the city’s much-loved Club der Visionaere nightspot. [Colin Chapman]
