Northwest Clubbing Highlights – June 2015
Time to pay respect to your fave Roman deity, the fabulous Juno. Here’s a few alternatives if you're running low on sacrificial goats…
Abandon Silence host the Dimensions launch party at The Kazimier on 5 Jun, lineup TBA but judging by the calibre of talent on offer at Fort Punta Christo this summer, it’s likely to be decent at the very least – £15. The day after there’s another worthy get-together at Constellations, the Baltic Garden Festival featuring Submotion Orchestra, Jonny Dub and mood-setter MC Kwasi – £14 tix still on offer. If you’re made of money you could do that in the day, then perhaps a short trip over to The Garage to catch an extended Ben Klock set (£13.50). How the other half live, eh?
Over in Mani, Zutekh set up camp for one night in Soup Kitchen on 6 Jun, bringing in Trevino and Anton Fitz to mark the occasion (£8). The same night sees James Blake and the whole 1800-DINOSAUR crew take to the Josh Brooks basement – tickets fiver a piece. The weekend after you’ve got pulsing techno courtesy of long-time Berghain resident, Norman Nodge (12 Jun, £8). Part-friend, part-mentor to both Marcel Dettmann and Marcel Fengler, Nodge has been working the Berlin scene since 2005 following a brief hiatus to pursue a career as a lawyer. Since then he’s been working on productions for Berghain’s Ostgut Ton and Dettmann’s MDR. Again, Soup Kitchen gets it right by inviting Awesome Tapes from Africa back to town – a night that promises plenty of unheard rumba, benga and jazzed-out afrobeat.
There’s a biggie in Liverpool as Todd Terje takes over the Bombed Out Church on 13 Jun, bringing in buddies Greg Wilson, Gerd Janson and Prins Thomas for some lighthearted disco revelry. Tickets a whopping £21 but it’s probably worth it all things considered. A slightly cheaper option is Frankie Feliciano at The Magnet, brought to you by the Hustle clan – half the damage at £10 adv.
On 19 Jun, Selective Hearing and Love Dose team up again to welcome DJ Qu and Juju & Jordash for a ten-hour warehouse deluxe. Qu is one of the new-breed of East-Coast DJs rising to prominence in recent years through his exploits in the studio. J&J will be flying over from Amsterdam for the occasion, bringing a trusty assemblage of Rolands/Yamahas with them for a live outing.
Now in its third year, Black Bee Soul Club returns on 19 Jun with its usual blend of uptempo, gritty soul music to Kraak Gallery – £3 adv or £5 OTD. El Diablo Social Club is also on 19 Jun, presenting an evening of house, disco and Balaeric oddities with help from Dean ‘Sunshine’ Smith and James Holroyd (£5).
What else… oh yeah, Mr Scruff is at Band On The Wall on 20 Jun, celebrating the 16th birthday of Keep It Unreal – a true Mancunian Institution. Remember, kids, no mobiles on the dancefloor as they will be confiscated along with one of your pinkies. More soul on offer that night, too, as Howling Rhythm broadcast some choice 60s Motown and RnB from their Ruby Lounge basecamp.
The weekend after that, 26 Jun, there’s one for the Scouse discophiles: boogie-edit champ from down under, Late Nite Tuff Guy, mans the Constellations booth as part of another allday / allnight offering. Expect plenty of familiar riffage and Tuff Cuts fare.
High Hoops takeover Islington Mill on 27 Jun following their party with Sprinkles, promising a ten-hour day party headed-up by Detroit don and one-quarter of Three Chairs, Marcellus Pittman. Tickets currently going for £12, so that’s decent value at £1.20 per hour. Good money also says Keep the Fire Burning will be played at some point.
Well now, there’s a little taster of the majesty Juno has in store for us all – bow low, countrymen.
