Think of a reggae artist in the UK and Jamaica, and chances are that The Mad Professor has worked with them: from Jah Shaka to Pato Banton to Johnny Clarke, and, of course, Lee "Scratch" Perry. Add collaborations with rap maestro's The Beastie Boys and Massive Attack to that list and you have an artist covering many bases. There's slim chance he'll be recruiting slippers and a pipe anytime soon. Not the traditional pipe anyway. From his experiments at school that earned him the name Mad Professor, to his beginnings as a service engineer, tweaking and fixing the mixing desks and amps of the music industry, it wasn't long before he had launched his own label Ariwa in 1979 (which has so far released over 200 albums). His Dub Me Crazy series was the start of something beautiful for the label, and was followed by a string of hits from Pato Banton, Macka B and Kofi, and U-Roy. From the man who brought you Escape To The Asylum of Dub, and the brilliantly titled Dub Maniacs On The Rampage, the Professor will be in the house for some chilled dub stepping. [Struan Otter]
