July Hip-Hop & Breaks Column

It's summer, so get some reggae on, sharpish.

Gig of the month without a doubt is Slum Village, here to pay tribute to fallen comrade Jay Dilla, at The Arches on the 28th (£8 adv). Glasgow hip-hop clubs haven't been courting my attention this month - so there's not much else to recommend. Through in the capital it's Give It Some!'s birthday on July 29th at the Bongo (11pm-3am, £4 b4 12, £6 after), expect a superlative mix of funk 45s, soul, jazz and rare groove from DJ Red 6 (Livesciences), and some dub heaviness from Decoy Roy (Penpushers) in the back room. I haven't been down to Motherfunk since its move to Opal Lounge on George St, but with free entry and DJs Gino & Fryer to entertain, who can argue - its free every Tuesday night. From the old to the new - Fusion comes to Henry's Cellar Bar on July 22nd for some funk, soul and hip-hop action (12am-3am, £3). Back to the Bongo, you might want to check out Headspin on July 15th - always good for a 4-deck mashup (10pm-3am, £7). Glenfiddich Independent Mix at Cabaret Voltaire on the 6th has Great Ezcape supporting The Herbaliser DJs (10pm-3am, £5 inc. free whisky cocktail). A quick mention for a reggae session: Step It Up at the Wee Red Bar on the 6th and the 28th plays positive roots music, all proceeds go to charity (10pm-3am, £4/£3). It's summer, so get some reggae on, sharpish. July would not be complete without a trip to Sugarbeat - this month's guests being Kid Kenobi and Shureshock (Cabaret Voltaire, 10.30pm-3am, £7). If you want your night in this column, email bram@skinnymag.co.uk (especially if you're Glaswegian). [Ibrahim]
