James Pants @ Huntley's and Palmer's Audio Club, Sub Club, 9 Jul

Article by Colin Chapman | 26 Jun 2008

Skinny favourite James Pants makes his Glasgow debut alongside Edinburgh’s Linkwood Family (now known as Beyonders) this month.

Responsible for the recent genre-hopping Welcome album on Stones Throw, the producer’s story began with him meeting his hero and Stones Throw head honcho Peanut Butter Wolf at a rave on prom night, to which Pants was accompanied by his bemused date.

A friendship between the pair was forged when they went record-shopping together; Pants later completed an internship at the label and thanks to his impressive array of recordings he signed to Stones Throw soon after.

Welcome sees Pants play drums, keys and guitar as well as sing, on a release that absorbs post-punk disco, soul, boogie, old-skool hip-hop and new wave - and his DJ sets are equally varied.

As Linkwood Family, Edinburgh-duo Nick Moore and Lindsay Todd recorded for the acclaimed Firecracker label, also run by Todd. Their Piece Of Mind track from last year earned heavy plays from the likes of Prins Thomas, Gilles Peterson and the Optimo DJs who included it on their recent Sub Club – 20 Years Underground mix CD.
