Havana, Old Fruit Market, Glasgow, 24 Feb

A Piece of Havana

Article by Dalai Dahmer | 10 Feb 2007
They say there is nowhere in the world quite like Havana. Well, for one night in February that won't be quite true. Havana (that's the rum) will be bringing Havana (that's the city) to Glasgow's Old Fruit Market. Almost literally, in fact - they are recreating a street of that inimitable city for the festivities. The street will be the backdrop to a black and white exhibition by Havana Club photographer James Sparshatt, and plays host to live hip-hop from Triangular Escuro and spun house grooves from DJ Armando of XMBPM. The evening is meant to be lubricated with Libres and Mojitos - the first two of which will be complimentary - served from their recreation of El Floridita, the favourite cocktail bar of the stars. Spot on; it's the same one Hemingway drank in while working on his alcoholism for the character of Hudson in Islands in the Stream - the bar known by some as the cradle of the Daiquiri. (Jack Nicholson is also apparently a fan, as is Naomi Campbell, as was Jean-Paul Sartre. Bit of a mixed bag, there.) Revelers will also have the opportunity to get themselves a hand rolled cigar each, both bespoke and rolled on site by Maikel Dario of the Cohiba cigar factory. Oh, and remember: this being Scotland, you won't be smoking your cigar inside. [Dalai Dahmer]
