Breaks / Hip-Hop Column

Adam Freeland's wild mashup of breaks, hip-hop and rock is a truly mighty behemoth of a thing

The highlights for June for hip-hop and breaks fans are thin on the ground, but undeniably top drawer. Top of your list this month should definitely be Adam Freeland, appearing exclusively at Sugarbeat on June 30. His wild mashup of breaks, hip-hop and rock is a truly mighty behemoth of a thing, as evinced by his Seven Nation Army and Smells Like Teen Spirit bootlegs, released a few years ago now but still as fresh as ever. The mighty We Want Your Soul should also get a spin - unmissable. The Utah Saints provide fine support as usual at one of the capital's best breaks nights. Earlier in the month, hip-hop headz should try not to miss the Glenfiddich Independent Mix on June 1st. See full preview for details - Peter Parker and the Penpushers will both provide some much needed leftfield hip-hop vibes. Over in Glasgow, Beatonic Beatdown features Grand Central's Boca 45 alongside local heroes Boom Monk ben and D.E.K. The Wee Red Vodka Bar is hosting Freq Beat on June 9, with an exclusive Ableton set from Steve Foulds (Breakitdown/UNIT). Nasty P will be rocking Soul Biscuits (business as usual then) on June 16 - always worth a look. And as we all shed a tear for the closure of the Vennue, head to the backroom of Xplicit for some hip-hop and grime from Blag1, Anemate, B-Raw and Meldrum. Last chance to see! If you have a hip-hop or breaks night you want to see in my column, please email bram@skinnymag.co.uk.
