When Gary Mac and Flix (formerly known for the Liquid Rooms' seminal Low Gravity nights) started midweek smash hit We Are... Electric at Cabaret Voltaire a year ago, they were catering to an electro scene that was just beginning to peak, and a year on they show no signs of stopping their ascendency. The attraction of a cheap or nonexistent door tax, and international guests of a high calibre (Felix Da Housecat, Mugwump, M.A.N.D.Y., Vector Lovers and many more) have made WA...E a celebrated fixture in the capital's nightlife. Their 2-part birthday celebrations begin on August 9, with one of the founding fathers of UK Techno/Electro, Andrew Weatherall. It goes without saying that he was the man who produced 'Screamadelica', and was involved heavily in the emergent dance scene in the late 80s/early 90s, alongside Paul Oakenfold, Pete Heller and Terry Farley. The latter two also co-founded respected label Boys' Own with Weatherall, producing remixes and tracks such as the Bocca Junior's Raise (53 Steps to Heaven). His collaborative works include record label The Rotters' Golf Club, and Two Lone Swordsmen (with Keith Tenniswood), recently re-invented as a vocal project. A host of other aliases and projects (Meek, Sabres of Paradise) make up his astoundingly diverse back catalogue, the full might of which he will bring to the WA... E turntables. Join us in wishing one of Edinburgh's finest young nights many happy returns, and watch out for part 2 of the celebrations on Aug 30, when Gary Mac and Flix will be joined by Bronx Dog Richard Sen's new project, Padded Cell.
