New mix from DJ Zinc: Trust Me I Was There – 1989

Article by News Team | 16 Jan 2014

UK bass music originator and veteran DJ Zinc has been sharing a series of historical mixes via his SoundCloud, showcasing the sound of UK club culture in the 80s – this week, he reached 1989, presenting a two-part mix tracing the origins of the UK bass sound. The first wave of UK garage was still distant, but jungle was about to surface, and the emergent shapes of its propulsive, stuttering Amen breaks can be heard in the selections of rave, techno, house and hip-hop featured in Zinc's wide-ranging mix.

Promising three hour-long mixes from '89, Zinc has dropped parts 1 and 2 on his SoundCloud. "By 1989 I'd left school and was working 9-5 then spending all my other time listening to pirates and buying music," he writes. "I didn't have enough money for turntables at this point so I used to chop up tracks using a crappy home hi-fi using the pause button. Luckily nowadays I have turntables!"

Part 2 features a track with guest vocals from DJ Rap, and a track that Zinc considers "the first jungle tune" near the end of the mix. No tracklist has been provided, so this will either be a musical education for those who were too young to go clubbing in '89, or a trip down memory lane for the dedicated ravers out there. You can also cop Chapter 2 in the series, focusing on 1988, here, and Chapter 1, focusing on 1986/7, here
