Hot off the Comics Press: First Issues

New titles and old heroes

The coming weeks look set to be dominated by the avalanche of DC first issues tumbling onto shelves. Though last week, just two titles were utilized to signify the end of the old DC universe and the beginning of the new, this week will see a dozen number ones going on sale.
Each fan will have their sights firmly set on their own particular superhero of interest, but where to look for those new to the DCU? Where else but Action Comics #1, by Grant Morrison: the counter-culture king returns to the man of steel for the new origin of Superman, updated for the modern age and the modern reader. A new dawn and a new beginning is here for the world’s most recognizable hero.
Alongside many fine ongoings at marvel, there are some standouts among the new titles. Wolverine kicks off a new mini - Debt of Death by David Lapham. The Marvel poster boy for cool - or absurd over-exposure takes on Battlerobo suits in Japan: a guilty pleasure rather than the advance in comic sophistication promised by Morrison's Superman.

Over on the alternative side of the Marvel spectrum, this week there is the chance to pick up Casanova Avarita #1 (of 4) written by one of their most talented writers working today, Matt Fraction. This first issue marks the return of the eponymous hero; the world’s sexiest and savviest superspy who “kills his way from dimension to dimension in a high-stakes, action-packed adventure.” At 32 all-new full colour pages, this title may not be one to miss.
