Comic Book Guy: Once More With Feeling!

Blog by Thom Atkinson | 15 Nov 2010

Name the first Superhero that comes to mind, no not Superman, another? No not Batman the next one, that’s right Spider-Man. As arguably the 3rd most recognisable Superhero to the general public and consistently Marvels flagship character, it is no surprise that the 4th Spiderman film is getting well underway. Web-heads can rejoice in looking forward to some big screen action in 2012. But if you can’t wait, Spider-Man was recently seen swinging into action in Spider-Man: Shattered Dimensions on the Ps3 and Xbox 360 where you can control four different versions of the wall crawler: Original, Ultimate, Noir and 2099. As the star of Marvel’s on going comic book series Amazing Spider-Man you just can’t get enough of Peter Parker.

We have long since realised the potential for the comic book movie, and with the TV adaptation of graphic novel The Walking Dead smashing viewing figure records stateside (predicted right here at The Skinny), further development deals for the small screen are hot on its heels. The cinema is spandex maxed, the small screen has the green light poised and the gaming world is ready to rumble. So is anybody missing out? Oh yes, something for the theatre crowd.

Spider-Man: Turn Off The Dark (which means?) with music by Bono and The Edge of U2 will preview on Nov 14th on Broadway for a general release on Nov 28th. The story is a familiar one as apparently it “follows the age-old tale of Peter Parker as extraordinary gifts are thrust upon him and he must struggle to find the way to balance great power and great responsibility.” In an interview with MTV, the former Marvel president and Spider-Man creator Stan Lee described the much-delayed production as “a feast for the eyes”.

He continued to say “It's one of the greatest shows ever conceived and put together.” "It's like watching the greatest dramatic show combined with the greatest circus. It's a wonderment. You can't stop looking at it! You can't believe what you're seeing." A circus? That makes perfect sense for a feast of Spider daring do; this could be possibly the best, or worst spectacle ever created – so if you are in New York you know what to do. As for the rest of us it seems unlikely we’ll see it at the Edinburgh Playhouse anytime soon.

PS: bonus point if you can name the reference behind that post title!
