Hot Off The Comics Press: Picks Of The Week 18 August

Headlines have been rife with controversy thanks to Marvel’s new spin on their Ultimate Spider-Man, as they announced the new wall-crawler will be Miles Morales, a Black-Hispanic teenager. The news generated plenty of buzz, positive and negative, for Marvel, and the readerse curious about  the current going-ons in the web-slinger’s world of diversity should also look at this week’s Spider Island: The Amazing Spider-Girl #1 (of 3) by Paul Tobin with art by Pepe Larraz. Spider-Girl has her powers back, but so do many in Manhattan thanks to the current storylines infestation predicament. Though the first installment of Spider Island was a little underwhelming, this tie-in promises a little more kick.

There is a double does of Y-chromosome-nfused super powers this week at DC, as both Power Girl #27 by Matthew Sturges and Supergirl #67 by Josua Hale Fialkov are part of this week’s solicitations. Where Power Gil has just twenty seconds to save the world three times over, Supergirl engages in the final chapter of “The Secret”. A dead body on the shores of Metropolis means trouble for Superman and Batman; who's behind it? None other than the Clown Prince of Crime himself, the Joker. Find out how Supergirl’s resolves is tested in this arc ending issue.

Never one to be left out, this week’s indie alternative is the tale of Mayuko in Owen Wiseman’s Samurai's Blood #3 (of 6). This eastern epic conjures the four levels of suffering upon its heroine and now, at the half-way point of the run, Mayuo is about to learn them all. Exotic art and a rich story make this a noteworthy, if not historically accurate, addition to this week’s competing titles.
