Tela Vuota @ Zizzi
Sometimes, while eating dinner, one might listen to music. Whole families are known to eat meals in front of the telly. Few get the opportunity to dine at the same time as five young artists create an epic mural on the walls around them.
At the launch of a new Italian restaurant in Glasgow’s trendy West End, diners are given just such an opportunity. Part of the Zizzi chain and situated on Cresswell Lane near Ashton Lane, guests get an insight into the working processes of a group of handpicked artists, all the while tucking into some classic Italian dishes – pretty decadent, to say the least.
Each artist is asked to respond to the city of Glasgow in their contribution to the mural, reflecting their unique experience of the renowned, post-industrial metropolis. Omercan Cirit, graduate of Painting and Printmaking from the Glasgow School of Art, draws beautifully symmetrical depictions of highlights from Glasgow’s skyline. Katy Thomson, likewise reflects on the cityscape, depicting all its complex layers. Linda Kutti picks out decorative details, adding cheeky little cherubs here and there around the restaurant. Amy Murray, a portrait painter, adds a little bit of character and colour to the room, showing some of the eccentricity of the city. Finally, Jiawei Guo, adds a surreal element to the otherwise quite pedestrian contributions: a man with a horse's head greets you on the way to the toilet, for instance.
Even if some of the motifs are predictable, the base of the lemon torte a little brittle, who can complain with such a canny mix of indulgences? Food, booze and art – what more can you ask for?
