The Mutual Members Show

Article by Andrew Cattanach | 01 Dec 2010

Defined negatively, the Mutual Members Show has been set up to stave off inertia. If it weren’t for the four graduates who first conceived of the fledgling collective, there would be a depressing horde of disenfranchised young artists cutting about Glasgow with nothing better to do than attend exhibition openings and slouch around Nice n Sleazy.

Positively, the Mutual Members Show is a collective articulation of the importance of art, declaring the art scene’s independence from commercial galleries and the art market. That 65 artists have come together to hang work in a very cold, disused and rundown factory reminds one of all the good things in life.

Among the multitude of artists showing at the extraordinary Glue Factory during the next two weeks, we’ll see Nils Guadagnin’s campfire installation. Consisting of fluorescent tubes and a guitar covered in bark, this peculiar work looks to evoke a folk music vibe, acting as a focal point around which bands will perform.

Vickie McDonald will show a large-scale sculptural sound work. A creature made from sewn together blobs, it will appear to have slid down the wall into the space where it now sits, breathing heavily.

Calum Thom is making a war bunker, complete with desk, chair, gasmask and military uniform. It will function as a specific context to hang his military-themed paintings, which he has humorously entitled Super Future Nazi's 2: Revenge of the Terrorists in Heals. Which is daft.

Opening on Friday 3 December from 6pm, this looks to be a wheeze. Bands will play from 9pm onwards and will include Jacob Yates and the Pearly Gates. Forget that it’s very, very cold and that you’re in a big unheated factory. Huddle together around the camp fire and have a dance. Before you all slip into an enduring hypothermic sleep.
