Summer Graffiti

Scotland may not have a Poster Boy but we’re doing pretty well when it comes to street art. Whether you’re into prints or graffiti, there’s enough to keep you busy until July. Here are our favourties

Graffimenco, (Friday 21 and Saturday 22 May, Dovecot Studios) a graffiti/flamenco event, includes live creations from the fantastic graffiti artist El Niño de las Pinturas, flamenco workshops, live music and graffiti workshops led by SOS and Mike Dabro. Free invites can be picked up from various venues in town (details on the flyer in the gallery). Not to be missed.

For more spray-painting, Skinny favourite Fraser Gray is showing some of his most recent works at the Glenrothes Exhibition Hall until 3 June. Fellow Dundee-based artist Martin McGuinness uses graffiti painting techniques and will show his work at the Duncan of Jordanstone’s Degree Show from 22 to 30 May. Definitely worth a look.

In Glasgow and Edinburgh, Mike Inglis’ work is currently on show at the Recoat Gallery as part of the Sleight of Hand exhibition (until 4 June), and at Axolotl (until 29 May). Mainly based on screen-printing, Inglis’ work explores our primitive need for belief systems to comprehend the world around us. Some of the recurring images in the prints are found graffiti ‘icons’.

Finally, this year’s Kelburn Garden Party will take place on 3 and 4 July, on the grounds of the very castle that was famously re-decorated. There’s only space for 500 people, but because we want our readers to be there we’re offering two pairs of tickets – you can’t say you didn’t know about it!
